The S.A.F.E. Approach – 4-Hour Hands On Seminar was specifically designed for nurses and healthcare employees who experience constant patient and/or public interaction in an increasingly volatile and potentially dangerous hospital environment. The first half of the 4-hour seminar is focused on safety awareness, communication and de-escalation skills for management of conflict and aggression. The second half of the course is focused on physical self-protection skills and techniques including escape and defense from: chokes, grabs, bear hugs, punches, scenarios of being knocked to the ground, clawing & biting.

The primary goal of The SAFE Approach is the Safety of nurses and those they interact with on a daily basis. Safety is achieved by the Attitude we carry in every human interaction, our Focus on the task at hand, and how well we listen and communicate Empathy to others.

The S.A.F.E. Approach philosophy is built upon the acronym S.A.F.E.

Safety: The primary goal of The S.A.F.E. Approach program is to ensure the safety of our student healthcare professionals. A well-educated student is an empowered student and an empowered student is a confident student. Confidence in oneself displaces fear and creates a safe environment for the student and for all others with whom they interact.

Attitude: Our attitude directly impacts and effects the outcomes of all communication and interactions. Education on types of attitudes and techniques on how to work with various attitude types assists students in communicating more effectively, efficiently and safely.

Focus: Awareness of our self, others and our environment requires training. The S.A.F.E. Approach   develops a mindset to focus on the task at hand and the person with whom we are interacting.

Empathy:  Listening and relating to others are critical components in effective communication, conflict de-escalation and resolution. The S.A.F.E. Approach takes an empathetic path towards achieving these objectives by building a foundation upon the old saying “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”.
